Ocean Vuong on Race, Sexuality and His New Novel

PBS Amanpour & Co.

Writer Ocean Vuong beautifully explores his experience with identity, specifically as it pertains to race and sexuality. As a Vietnamese-American man, he recalls growing up in a society that largely underestimated his talent and undervalued his creativity, which he received from both the outside world and within his own family. Vuong is truly a marvel in the way he approaches life- with grace and vulnerability. This is a fantastic conversation that touches on a myriad of issues that can be felt by and resonate with every corner of humanity.

“I’m angry, of course, but I don’t write with rage. I can’t. I think rage and anger are energies. They’re raw energies, ready to be recycled and reused… I’m more interested in using the energy of compassion and understanding.”
